Nick + Shelby | Central Park Garden Proposal + Engagement Session

Proposal Photography + Engagement session | Central Park, NY

One of my favorite gigs is being the surprise Wedding Proposal P{hotographer. I've had these gigs at least once every year since I've been shooting. Not often enough you might think ? Naaaw, it's JUST enough so that each one is memorable and gets all the attention it deserves. With the extensive amount of planning that goes into each session, I don't think I could afford to do more of these and still carry out as many of my professional and personal creative pursuits.

Nick, the groom-to-be first got in touch with me about one month before his planned trip to New York City. In our first phone discussion I learned that he and Shelby have been a couple in Austin Texas for about three years, and that she'd just graduated from college last month. Nick already had a few ideas about where he wanted to pop the question, but he wasn't sure which one of them would be the best to execute, as far as photography was concerned. This is where my experience and understanding of New York pedestrian traffic, and of other land mark traits would help Nick decide on the best place to propose.

After we decided together that the Central Park Conservancy Garden possessed the best characteristics, the ball was then in my court to help decide on the details of the proposal itself. This meant going to the garden and coming up with a game plan to suggest to Nick about where a great spot to propose would be. I collaborated with Nick about this during the weeks leading up to his trip, and we'd decided that the proposal would happen in the English Garden of the Central Park Conservancy.

On the morning of the proposal Michele and I got ourselves to the garden just after opening. We wanted to be there early enough so that we could get a sense of the light, and also of the foot traffic. We also took the time to rehearse in position for the proposal. We had pictures of the couple so that we'd recognize them, never having met either one before our session in the garden.

When Nick arrived, rather than bee-lining toward the spot we discussed, he meandered around the garden for a while as we tailed them. Just as planned.

This was one of the best proposal/engagement sessions I've had all summer, I hope you enjoy a selection of the photos Michele and I created. Nick & Shelby are an energetic, and enthusiastic about life couple. We wish them the best on their nuptials and in starting their life together.

How a trash bag helps you “go” alone in your wedding dress

How does a woman get into and out of a huge wedding dress to use the restroom during her own wedding? Before this trick, with the help of one or two bridesmaids, no doubt.

Here's something I think brides probably have little to no regard about when it comes to the vision of their wedding day. That is, unless they've once been on the helping side during someone else's wedding.

Fortunately, the bloggers over at OFFBEATBRIDE have procured a handy hack that can make this a single lady task; the way we all would probably prefer it.

I figured this trick out just prior to my wedding, as my dress was (as you can see) particularly unruly and I didn't really love the idea of employing a small army to help me keep it out of the toilet water (though my bridesmaids were willing to help, bless em). Had it been a bit easier to get in and out of, I might have just taken it off, but no — that was a complicated, multi-person operation as well, involving a whole bunch of lacing and carefully placed safety pins and chicken cutlets — not to mention being topless in a public restroom.

Step 1: Start with a poofy dress.

Step 2: Add a large, sturdy trash bag.

Tella + Bryan | Brooklyn Engagement Session

On a lovely fall day, we had the opportunity to meet a couple that embodied Brooklyn style. These high school sweethearts were the definition of sweet and low key during their session along the iconic DUMBO waterfront. We were lucky to have a third shooter with us to capture this e-session, amidst a flurry of other couples making their own memories with a record 5 weddings occurring over the course of the afternoon!

Just as winter was headed towards its end, Carlos and I were about to shoot the wedding of Brandon and Vonny, which occurred on a spring like day in March. We were the photographers for their E-Session a few months earlier, so the wedding day was a comfortable and fun one! Their wedding was a beautiful mix of personal touches and traditional Chinese elements, which added up to one unique and lovely wedding. See below for how the day unfolded in Midtown Manhattan.

A New Year : New Products

Just wanted to share on the blog one of the changes I'm making in my product offerings. Nothing major, but it's a matter of presentation.

I'm now shipping all of my Images on disc inside of a personalized dvd case, and enclosed within packaging shown below :)

Why the change you ask? Well, it's a lot simpler and more elegant a solution than the manner I was working before. Where I can simplify my process and improve upon presentation, that's all the reason I need!

Inside you'll find something much like this :

For Couples: Booking an E-session

Engagement photography sessions are a great way to get some romantic pictures of couples showcasing and celebrating their new engagement.

There are three things we'd like you to consider when preparing for an engagement session with us :

Picking a location

You may or may not consider it important to pick a location that works to best represent elements of both your personalities, experiences, and style. Think about what kind of mood you wish to evoke with the backdrop for your pictures, whether it be youthful, bright and soft, Urban & Modern, Classy & Elegant, or Fun, Light Hearted and Whimsical.

Dressing for the Occasion

Dressing for a engagement session is completely up to you! Some couples lean toward a more traditional and formal session: dress shirts, jackets and dress pants for the men and a party/cocktail dress for the women. Whichever style you choose, be sure re to pick something that is both comfortable and flatters you. This really isn't the time to be experimental, only for the fear of not liking how pictures turn out, or more specifically, how you look in them while wearing something out of character & uncomfortable for you. If you prefer to go more casual I recommend that you dress in layers and chose an outfit that reflects your personality. For instance, you can wear a t-shirt that shows off a tv show, a sports team, or something that's a trademark of your character.
In terms of color, vibrant colors and/or simple patterns are encouraged, especially in the winter when things tend to be dark and dull outside. Also, it adds visual interest to your images to pick complimentary colors that fall in-step with your partners: if one person wears yellow, the other can wear something with purple in it. Other options for this can be red/green and blue/orange. Since it is winter now as we're writing this, it's important that we have our clients dress in layers if they can, and wear simple accessories that add a pop of color and interest to the photographs ( think a cute hat or a scarf, or even earrings and necklaces).

Inspiration/How you'll use the photos

We always encourage our couples to bring any ideas they may have to the session. Feel free to forward images you've seen that speak to how you may want to use your own photos. If you haven't seen anything that speaks to you - no worries! Carlos and I have developed our own sense of style and know you'll appreciate our ideas.
It's also be important to know before-hand how you want to use these pictures. Some couples simply want to celebrate their engagement and kickoff the start of the new phase of their relationship. Other couples may use the pictures for a save the date, for their wedding website, or for a slideshow during the engagement party or the wedding day. Please, let us know if you plan to use your pictures for any of these as we'll want to make sure we get shots for those specific uses.

Scott’s Proposal to Susie | Central Park, NY

In our current age of recording and sharing all of life's moments, there is a lot of pressure to get everything leading up to (and including) the wedding perfect. This, of course, includes the proposal. Luckily, for one of our latest clients, Scott and Suzy, their proposal was pretty picture perfect!
Scott contacted us not too long ago to book an increasingly common type of request: a surprise proposal captured by photographers, followed by an impromptu engagement session. Scott and Suzy were visiting NYC from Vancouver to celebrate the holiday season, so when better to ask that special question?
The arrangements were made and on the pre-selected date, Carlos and I waited inside Central Park for the couple to make their appearance. A few minutes later (filled with spy-like stealth action) we were following Scott and Suzy to Scott's pre-selected spot and we took our positions  After pointing out the wonderful view of the city, Scott knelt down on a bridge overlooking the pond and with a beautiful and heartfelt speech, Suzy accepted with a teary and happy YES! This interaction gave much delight to the crowd that formed around them who clapped with joy and shared their congratulations.
After Suzy was able to catch her breath, we introduced ourselves and gave our congratulations. Then we all  set off on a jaunt through Central Park and began a picturesque e-session with our Canadian couple. The Holidays in New York are always an enchanting time, and the added romance of a surprise proposal heightened the love and sweetness expressed in the e-session pictures.
