Tella + Bryan | Brooklyn Engagement Session

On a lovely fall day, we had the opportunity to meet a couple that embodied Brooklyn style. These high school sweethearts were the definition of sweet and low key during their session along the iconic DUMBO waterfront. We were lucky to have a third shooter with us to capture this e-session, amidst a flurry of other couples making their own memories with a record 5 weddings occurring over the course of the afternoon!

Just as winter was headed towards its end, Carlos and I were about to shoot the wedding of Brandon and Vonny, which occurred on a spring like day in March. We were the photographers for their E-Session a few months earlier, so the wedding day was a comfortable and fun one! Their wedding was a beautiful mix of personal touches and traditional Chinese elements, which added up to one unique and lovely wedding. See below for how the day unfolded in Midtown Manhattan.

A New Year : New Products

Just wanted to share on the blog one of the changes I’m making in my product offerings. Nothing major, but it’s a matter of presentation.

I’m now shipping all of my Images on disc inside of a personalized dvd case, and enclosed within packaging shown below :)

Why the change you ask? Well, it’s a lot simpler and more elegant a solution than the manner I was working before. Where I can simplify my process and improve upon presentation, that’s all the reason I need!

Inside you’ll find something much like this :

For Couples: Booking an E-session

Engagement photography sessions are a great way to get some romantic pictures of couples showcasing and celebrating their new engagement.

There are three things we’d like you to consider when preparing for an engagement session with us :

Picking a location

You may or may not consider it important to pick a location that works to best represent elements of both your personalities, experiences, and style. Think about what kind of mood you wish to evoke with the backdrop for your pictures, whether it be youthful, bright and soft, Urban & Modern, Classy & Elegant, or Fun, Light Hearted and Whimsical.

Dressing for the Occasion

Dressing for a engagement session is completely up to you! Some couples lean toward a more traditional and formal session: dress shirts, jackets and dress pants for the men and a party/cocktail dress for the women. Whichever style you choose, be sure re to pick something that is both comfortable and flatters you. This really isn’t the time to be experimental, only for the fear of not liking how pictures turn out, or more specifically, how you look in them while wearing something out of character & uncomfortable for you. If you prefer to go more casual I recommend that you dress in layers and chose an outfit that reflects your personality. For instance, you can wear a t-shirt that shows off a tv show, a sports team, or something that’s a trademark of your character.
In terms of color, vibrant colors and/or simple patterns are encouraged, especially in the winter when things tend to be dark and dull outside. Also, it adds visual interest to your images to pick complimentary colors that fall in-step with your partners: if one person wears yellow, the other can wear something with purple in it. Other options for this can be red/green and blue/orange. Since it is winter now as we’re writing this, it’s important that we have our clients dress in layers if they can, and wear simple accessories that add a pop of color and interest to the photographs ( think a cute hat or a scarf, or even earrings and necklaces).

Inspiration/How you’ll use the photos

We always encourage our couples to bring any ideas they may have to the session. Feel free to forward images you’ve seen that speak to how you may want to use your own photos. If you haven’t seen anything that speaks to you – no worries! Carlos and I have developed our own sense of style and know you’ll appreciate our ideas.
It’s also be important to know before-hand how you want to use these pictures. Some couples simply want to celebrate their engagement and kickoff the start of the new phase of their relationship. Other couples may use the pictures for a save the date, for their wedding website, or for a slideshow during the engagement party or the wedding day. Please, let us know if you plan to use your pictures for any of these as we’ll want to make sure we get shots for those specific uses.

Scott’s Proposal to Susie | Central Park, NY

In our current age of recording and sharing all of life’s moments, there is a lot of pressure to get everything leading up to (and including) the wedding perfect. This, of course, includes the proposal. Luckily, for one of our latest clients, Scott and Suzy, their proposal was pretty picture perfect!
Scott contacted us not too long ago to book an increasingly common type of request: a surprise proposal captured by photographers, followed by an impromptu engagement session. Scott and Suzy were visiting NYC from Vancouver to celebrate the holiday season, so when better to ask that special question?
The arrangements were made and on the pre-selected date, Carlos and I waited inside Central Park for the couple to make their appearance. A few minutes later (filled with spy-like stealth action) we were following Scott and Suzy to Scott’s pre-selected spot and we took our positions  After pointing out the wonderful view of the city, Scott knelt down on a bridge overlooking the pond and with a beautiful and heartfelt speech, Suzy accepted with a teary and happy YES! This interaction gave much delight to the crowd that formed around them who clapped with joy and shared their congratulations.
After Suzy was able to catch her breath, we introduced ourselves and gave our congratulations. Then we all  set off on a jaunt through Central Park and began a picturesque e-session with our Canadian couple. The Holidays in New York are always an enchanting time, and the added romance of a surprise proposal heightened the love and sweetness expressed in the e-session pictures.

Ava + Hemang Engagement Session | Highline Park, NY

High line Park Engagement Session | Ava + Hemang

January is perhaps the least booked month when it comes to E-sessions here on the East coast, U.S. The midst of winter isn’t a period we typically think about having portraits taken, especially not outdoors! However, I am personally seeing an increase in the amount of inquiries I get for E-sessions at the beginning of the year.

I’m actually pretty eager to exercise my eye outdoors – even when it’s cold. Perhaps especially when it’s cold out. I tend to get mired handling administrative, marketing strategy, or professional educational stuff in the winter  months just before wedding season starts.  So I welcome the chance to get out there and actually do something interactive.

Ava and Hemang contacted me a few weeks ago, wondering how soon we could set up a shoot. Their wedding is in May of 2013 and they expressed that they basically wanted to use E-session photos for their wedding website. They’re having a huge traditional Indian wedding, but it’ll take place in Michigan and sadly, I’m not the photographer booked for that event. Even so, I’ll be in touch with them so that I can get a peek at how their wedding day went. Michele and I heard about what they have planned and it sounded beautiful..can’t wait to see it.

Our E-session location was chosen by our couple this time, and it was the first time I’d ever held an E-session in the Meat packing district. Fortunately, the day we decided to shoot turned out to be rather mild for January. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday afternoon and it seemed that all of New York City wanted to enjoy the day outdoors with us.

As you might imagine, a crowded outdoor space can present unique challenges for E-session photography, but we made the best of it and even found a room inside the Standard hotel where we decided to warm up when the wind outdoors became too much to deal with. We continued the shoot indoors just before sunset.

Michele and I often encourage couples to share with us any ideas or concepts for a photo that they’ve seen and want to try to reproduce. Ava had an example of a shot similar to the  one I took below. It involved a lot of post-processing to attempt to replicate it, but I was happy to try it for them.

Vonny + Brandon E-session | Chinatown, NYC

Vonny and Brandon are a Brooklyn couple that Michele and I were thrilled to begin working with a few months ago. We immediately recognized that they were the type of couple we wanted to work with after our first meeting. It’s difficult to explain just how we knew that; it was an ineffable combination of just the right amount of enthusiasm, vision, and rapport, which we established right away.

All couples that book my service receive a complimentary Engagement or E-session, which I think is an critical element of my service because it accomplishes two things. It gives all of us, Michele , myself, and couples the opportunity to get cozy taking pictures before their wedding. Secondly, it gives me the chance to engage  with couples on a personal level and build a relationship based on trust.

This summer really was a scorcher, and nobody looked forward to a humid and sweaty photo session. That”s why we scheduled our session toward the end of the summer/beginning of fall, to capitalize on the somewhat cooler weather to be expected. Although this session will still happen several months before the wedding, we decided that it’d be best to capitalize on what the season offers in photographic opportunities.
The red thread of fate is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend and is also used in Japanese legend. According to this myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of those that are destined to meet each other in a certain situation or help each other in a certain way. Often, in Japanese culture, it is thought to be tied around the little finger. The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.I enjoy working with couples on the planning of their E-session, especially when they bring ideas of their own to the table. Vonny was inspired by, and wanted to incorporate the theme of the red thread of fate - which exists
within many Asian cultures. According to the myth, the gods have tied an invisible red thread around the ankle or pinky finger of each person, connecting to them to their partner. The thread can be tangled, though never broken.

Much like another E-session I shot last year, we decided to incorporate an outfit change mid-session. Vonny and Brandon changed into more casual attire for the 2nd half of the session. While it’s not always logistically feasible to have an outfit change, we were glad we did because it got quite cool later that evening.
