Who is Carlos Andrew Thomas?

 

I’m a friendly New Yorker  and a guy with a passion for the visual arts and science. I was the young boy that got his hands into everything new and technical growing up, and I’m still a gadget nerd today. Though, I must say it’s becoming a real challenge to keep up with all the developments today. Still,  I love to learn as much I can about all systems, mechanical, electrical, and even the biological–

Other than that, I’m a true New Yorker- in the sense that I’m often busily darting from point A to B without taking the time to stop and smell the roses – you know – the way tourists tend to while they’re crawling through Times Square. But I’m really working on that! I’ll be crawling in your path one of these days.

 

When I’m not photographing people, I can be often be found at the book store exploring new frontiers in cognitive neuroscience, reading about the newest photography gear, post processing techniques, or fueling my creative inspiration… Hmm..and I’m usually having a slice of cheese cake while I’m at it.

My journey with photography has been a little more than 10 years old, and I’m self-taught. The learning process continues every day – thankfully – because photography is not just about mastery of the camera, it also involves the human element and people are always teaching me, whether they realize it or not.

If I had to describe my philosophy about my picture taking, it’s that a photographer’s pictures don’t stand in isolation, the successful photo results from my ability to put subjects at ease, from the technical mastery of my tools, and from the creative vision I set out with.
I employ all of these skills when I take the task of capturing your event or your family photos. I love to meet new people and I love the opportunity to create a  keepsake for your family.

I want my images to stir the emotions that you had on your wedding day every time you look at them.  But even more importantly, I want to capture your true personalities on camera, the moments in-between that show who you both really are.

I’ve dedicated the last few years to developing my creative techniques, or the bag of tricks which I pull from in my take on wedding photography.

What type of couples work well with me?

I work well with all types of people by nature, but the couple that really stands to benefit from choosing me as their wedding photographer has an admiration for photography themselves. They may appreciate the arts, and want to trust someone who is just like they are. I take the art of photography seriously and each wedding is carefully considered with regards to lighting and environments for optimal image creation. The couples I work with know their first priority is to enjoy their wedding day and all the moments with their family and friends. They are concerned with remembering the day just as it occurred, and also about capturing meaningful emotionally captivating images which snap them back to the moment it was taken. You understand that this is a once in a lifetime event and want the very best images to represent it.

What is my style of photography like?

I’m fascinated by the subjective component of any art, that is to say, how each person perceives and is uniquely moved by any work of art, be it musical, theatrical, or physical, such as painting and photography. In my personal projects I like to utilize experimental techniques in post processing to evoke feeling or to display an interesting perspective. When it comes to lifestyle photography I don’t experiment as much, and instead focus on the subject of the photograph. I like to use off camera lighting, but I also love natural light photography. I utilize both to effect, depending on circumstances.

I have photojournalistic aspirations stylistically, but I can’t separate myself from what I capture, so I sometimes choose to bring something to the photo that represents more than was captured raw in the moment( by post editing), if, and only if, it distills the essence of the moment. When I shoot people, I strive to make a unique image that translates the individual subjects’ emotions. I also love wedding details and feel they are just as important to capture in order to complete your wedding story. My photography somewhat conforms somewhat to contemporary trends, but I think it stands apart from others in my techniques of post processing. You be the judge.

This all sounds great for my wedding. But, it also seems expensive. Are we going to be able to afford all this?

Yes, it is an investment for you. Photography is one of only a few physical items that you will hold on to from your wedding day. Since these pictures are going to be with you for your entire marriage, I want them to become an heirloom, that will be cherished from generation to generation.
